Welcome to Spandyland!!!

Spandy Andy has a current hit viral video (http://goo.gl/JyR7C) and is becoming a worldwide celebrity. Here’s his back-story.

For this collection she was inspired by the silhouttes Seydou Keïta  portrayed in his photography during the late 50′s and throughout the 60′s. Another thing that became a hobby almost like an obsession to her was crocheting, in the collection there are details made in crochet, this gave a playful turn point in her somewhat minimalistic esthetic, but still staying true to herself. Her clothes are quite versartile and can be mixed and matched easily.  This is not a collection that makes a hard statement or makes you stare in awe. What you see is what you get, there’s nothing more to it, just plain and beautiful, like waking up in the morning with a white button-up shirt.

“I grew up in Orange County real close to Disneyland, and when I was a kid I would go [there] every week for like years,” she said. “I was totally, totally obsessed. The slogan for Disneyland is ‘the happiest place on Earth.’ … Where I lived, everyone I knew was a total fucked-up drug addict, going nowhere, depressed, with this perfect veneer of suburbia…. So it was the contrast of going to Disneyland and then going back to my home life and having it seem like such a mess.”

We have a Punk meets Jock collection, I have to say that I love it, it has all the elements I look for in a collection, its entertaining, you wonder what is going to walk down the catwalk next and you wonder what story the collection is actually narrating , and interesting shapes -even if they look like Edward Scissorhands after a huge amount of steroids and countless hours in the gym- I know a lot of people might think of Dr. Frankenstein, but I just thought about Edward trying to fit in the human world, at first he is all skinny and then he starts immitating what the jocks at school do, getting all pumped in the gym but still dressing like a punk -creeping out everyone at the halls -, that’s what I thought when I saw this collection.

I can actually see all those clothes in the Japanese streetstyle scene, like a parade of entertainment to all the bloggers and all sadomasochists enjoying the view of those spiked masks. The cuts are amazingly tailoresd, the prints are humorous and the colors of the collection are quite classic, greys,blacks, navy’s, but there’s an exception with that amazing splash of color in the middle, pale pinks,mints and really cute designs cut in the collection and helps us get over the monoty that might be created during the show. The only think that I didn’t really understand was the idea of the skirts- its a nice detail  and adds  more to the creepiness- but it just reminds of Matilda’s Ágatha Tronchatoro.

“The body as an enigma, I explore it, step by step, like a space that I need to reconstruct, to unify. Fabrics are materials that came naturally to me as an analogy to our own biological tissues: bones, fibers, cristalls… I start with old bed sheets and shirts, embroided handkerchieves and second-hand fabrics that I cut up, put the fragments together, pad them and then sew them by hand. In this way I reconstruct different body parts (arms, legs, heads) and several organs and bone structures. Then, acting as a mirror to anatomic parts, I create symbolic forms: cristalls made of pearls, flowers, animals, fantastic creatures, allegories, dreams. My inspiration derives from old traditions as well as from primitive beliefs and votive practices.”

This is probably the most honest documentary about art, prejudices and the expectations that audience (buyers, galleries, common people… and so on) create around artists and performers.

The short studio visit was directed by Alexis Wanneroy and, oh boy, I really dig into his technique (interviews, music score, editing) and arguments. This video deserve all the kudos and the love.
